It appears Americans are sophisticated just enough for the green siren to acquire a French cafe chain and roll it out nationwide. In a deal worth $100 million, Starbucks will take over San-Francisco based La Boulange and introduce its products into Starbucks’ stores beginning in 2013. Over time, the Seattle-based giant will also roll out brick-and-mortar units of La Boulange across the nation. It will open in markets where “demand” justifies it or “wherever opportunity takes us” according to Starbucks U.S. President Cliff Burrows. Hence, the question is whether the D.C. market is worthy enough of a La Boulange flagship? Definitely! Consider the success found at PAUL, Le Pain Quotidien and La Madeleine in the metro area.
